Who is UrbaCore?
UrbaCore is the urban encore experience. UrbaCore offers inner-city youth, who possess a passion for becoming computer programmers, a chance at achieving that goal despite not being able to go to the best colleges or IT programs.
Will I get in if I apply to UrbaCore?
The screening process to get into UrbaCore’s program is extremely competitive. Acceptance into the program will be made by the UrbaCore Admissions Committee based on who they think will fit the programs goals and vision.
How long is the program?
UrbaCore’s program is for four years. The first two years, the students will be enrolled in classes at Chattanooga State Technical Community College, while working part-time on smaller projects. The last two years, the students will work full time on major projects, or working on assignments with corporate partnering businesses.
What are the minimum requirements to get into the program?
UrbaCore requires a high school diploma, great work ethic, a strong passion, and desire to work as a computer programmer.
If I do not get chosen initially, does that mean that I have to wait until the next CORE?
Not necessarily. Every CORE has an acceptance list and a waiting list. UrbaCore has rolling enrollment, and you may be chosen in the middle of a CORE to join the company. Rolling enrollment is based on availability, and as space becomes available.
Will I need to have any computer experience in order to apply to UrbaCore?
The selection process to get into UrbaCore is extremely competitive. Having said that, preference will obviously be given to those who possess and demonstrate a working knowledge of computer applications and programs. Although it is not required that you have an abundance of computer experience, it is highly recommended.
What type of training will I get with UrbaCore?
UrbaCore takes inner-city youth and provides them with options at succeeding professionally in life. They will not only be inspired and taught, but they will learn all aspects of computer programming. They will build and create websites for different projects and be skilled in Java, C++, Visual BASIC, RPG, ASP.net, and other computer programming languages.
What is the target age that Urbacore usually works with for this program?
UrbaCore’s ideal candidate is usually between the ages of 18-22.
What does CORE Mean?
CORE will be followed by a number. The word CORE followed by the number indicates the class number. The first class will be CORE1, the second class will be CORE2, etc.
Will I be paid while I'm in school, and while working at UrbaCore?
Yes, you will be paid while you are in school, and as you successfully complete your courses and projects, your pay will increase over time. A person in their fourth year in the program will make more than someone in their first year.
Will I be enrolled and start classes on my first day at UrbaCore?
Chattanooga State Technical Community College is on the semester system. Depending on when you get accepted into the program, you will be under the instruction of an UrbaCore Computer Programming Instructor, who will teach you the fundamentals and basics of computer programming. During that time you will be assigned tasks to work on different projects such as creating websites for non-profit organizations. You will also be sitting and learning from experienced computer programmers, and assisting them with assignments.
